How Much Does Eating Out Really Cost in South Africa?

An introduction to the Dine South Africa Price Index — the country's first live menu-price tracker.

A question with no answer

Ask almost any economist a question about property prices and you'll get a chart within the hour. Ask how much a burger costs across South Africa and the room goes quiet.

This is odd, because the price of eating out is one of the most felt economic indicators in the country. It shapes household budgets, drives foot traffic, determines whether a date night is affordable, and quietly signals inflation long before official figures catch it. Yet unlike petrol, bread, or electricity, restaurant menu prices are not tracked uniformly. They sit, unstructured, on thousands of separate menus — invisible to anyone trying to compare them.

The Dine South Africa Price Index exists to close that gap. It is the country's first continuously-updated tracker of average menu prices for popular dishes, computed directly from live restaurant menus across all nine provinces.

What it is

The Price Index takes real, current menu prices from real South African restaurants, aggregates them by dish, and reports the national average, the range, and the provincial breakdown — updated regularly, not annually.

How the index works

The index does not estimate. It measures.

  1. It reads real menus. Every dish in the index is matched against actual menu items from restaurants, with their live base prices.
  2. It groups by dish. A "burger" is a burger, whether it's served in a craft kitchen in Cape Town or a family franchise in Polokwane.
  3. It computes statistics. For each dish, the index calculates the average, minimum, maximum and median price nationally, plus a per-province breakdown.
  4. It updates continuously. As menus change — and they do, frequently — the index recalculates. There is no annual report. There is a living number.

What the early data suggests

The full picture will deepen as coverage grows, but several patterns are already visible.

Price dispersion is wider than people assume

The gap between the cheapest and most expensive version of the same dish is often enormous. A burger can vary by more than a factor of three across the country. This is not just a quality difference — it's a geography, rent, and positioning difference that diners rarely see until they're at the table.

Province tells you more than "South Africa"

A national average is comforting, but a provincial average is useful. The same dish can be meaningfully cheaper in one province than another, for reasons that have little to do with the food and everything to do with the local market. Per-province price filtering makes "is this good value here, right now?" an answerable question.

Price moves faster than menus are updated

Restaurants change prices more often than they publish those changes. A diner relying on a screenshot from four months ago is working with stale information. A continuously recalculated index keeps the number honest.

Why this is more than a curiosity

A restaurant price index sounds like a niche product. It is, in fact, useful to almost everyone in the food economy.

For diners, it answers "is this restaurant charging a fair price for this dish?" — the single most useful question when comparing options.

For restaurant owners, it answers "where do I sit in the market for my most-ordered dishes?" Independent operators rarely have a reliable view of competitor pricing. The index gives them one, objectively.

For the industry, it provides a basis for real conversations about affordability, input-cost pass-through, and where margins are being squeezed.

For tourists, it sets realistic expectations before they land, so a visitor can budget a meal in Durban the way they'd budget a meal in any capital city that takes food data seriously.

From a number to a tool

The Price Index is not finished. It will grow in three directions.

  • More dishes, tracked with the same rigour as the early cohort.
  • More granular geography, from provincial averages down to city and suburb-level.
  • Over time, so the index isn't just a snapshot — it's a trend. Watching how a burger's price moves over a year tells a story about the economy that GDP growth simply cannot.

How to use it today

The simplest way to use the index is to treat it the way you'd treat any price comparison. Before you book, look up the dish. Before you budget a night out, see what the average is. Before you assume a city is unaffordable, check the provincial breakdown.

The number won't make the decision for you. But it will make the decision honest.

The premise

A price you can't compare is a price you can't trust. The Dine South Africa Price Index makes restaurant pricing comparable, for the first time, at national scale.
